Christian Almer, a talented mountain guide from Grindelwald, enjoyed a high reputation among the first generation of Swiss mountain guides. In 1865, he refused a first ascent of the Matterhorn, which may have proved to be lifesaving. Nevertheless, he achieved legendary status through his first ascents of the Mönch and the Eiger.
